Goat Cheese

Henri Willig was one of the first to discover that Gouda cheese could also be made from goat's milk. Today it is impossible to imagine a world without Gouda goat cheese. Our goat's cheese has a very mild flavor and is delicious when paired with a good glass of port wine, for example.

Just like sheep cheese and cow cheese, goat cheese is also available in different varieties, each with its own characteristics. Some prefer young with a creamy flavor, others prefer a slightly stronger tasting mature  or a delicious old goat cheese.

Cheese from goat milk has a white color. This is because goats convert carotene into vitamin A. As a result, the yellow coloring does not end up in the cheese unlike cow cheese which does have a yellow color.

Are cheeses made from goat's milk healthy?

A common question. This type of cheese contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B11, B12 and D. In addition to vitamins, goat's cheese naturally contains a number of other important substances such as potassium, calcium and phosphorus. It is also slightly easier to digest than cheese made from cow's milk because it contains smaller fat globules. In terms of cholesterol, goat's cheese, sheep's cheese and "regular" cheese are similar. In fact, goat's milk contains slightly more cholesterol than cow's milk. Fresh goat cheese contains the least amount of fat. If you are looking for a less fatty variety, choose a low-fat variety.

Can you eat goat cheese if you are pregnant?

Goat cheese can be divided into two types: hard goat cheese and soft goat cheese. There is a big difference between these two varieties.

Hard variety
Hard cheese contains little moisture and is made from pasteurized milk. Because the milk is pasteurized, hard goat cheese is safe to eat during pregnancy.

Soft variety
Fresh soft cheeses, on the other hand, are sometimes made from raw milk and therefore are not always safe to eat for pregnant women. If the packaging says "au lait cru" or "raw milk," it is best to avoid this variety during pregnancy. It may contain a listeria bacterium that is dangerous for unborn babies. If you have accidentally eaten soft cheese, you need not worry immediately. If you experience fever, nausea or diarrhea it is wise to contact a doctor.
