Preparation

  • 1

Preheat the oven to 200 °C top and bottom heat. Line a baking tray with baking paper and allow the puff pastry to warm up briefly.

  • 2

Roll out the puff pastry on the baking tray. Fold the edges inwards about 1 cm and press lightly. Prick holes in the bottom with a fork, but leave the edge free.

  • 3

Spread the herb cream cheese evenly over the bottom of the puff pastry. Keep the raised edge clear to allow it to bake nice and golden brown and crispy.

  • 4

Slice the red onion into thin half-rings and halve the cherry tomatoes. First, spread the onion over the cream cheese, then arrange the tomatoes on top and sprinkle generously with Henri Willig Organic Jersey Cheese.

  • 5

Add freshly ground pepper to taste. If necessary, drizzle the savoury oven-baked tart lightly with olive oil for an extra creamy result.

  • 6

Bake the savoury oven-baked tart in the middle of the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until the edges are golden brown and fluffy and the cheese is lightly melted.

  • 7

Let the savoury oven-baked tart cool for a few minutes and then cut it into points or rectangles. Delicious as lunch, appetiser or light supper.

Which cheese tastes best on a puff pastry tart?

For a puff pastry tart, a cheese that melts well whilst delivering plenty of flavour is an excellent choice. Henri Willig Organic Jersey Cheese gives this tart a creamy texture and a rich, artisanal flavour. During baking, the cheese cubes melt slightly, giving every bite a rich cheesy sensation. By spreading the cheese evenly over the tart, you’ll enjoy a perfect combination of crispy puff pastry, soft cream cheese and melted cheese.

When should you serve a savoury tray bake straight from the oven?

This farmhouse-style tart is surprisingly versatile. Serve it warm for lunch, as a light evening meal with a fresh salad, or cut it into smaller pieces as a snack with drinks. This savoury tart also comes into its own on a buffet, during a picnic or at a cosy brunch. Thanks to its simple preparation and rich flavour, it’s a dish that’s appreciated both on weekdays and on special occasions.

Why do cherry tomatoes and red onion go so well with cheese?

When roasted, cherry tomatoes develop a soft texture and a natural sweetness that pairs perfectly with creamy cheese. Red onion adds a slight spiciness that becomes milder and sweeter when roasted. Together, these ingredients create a flavourful topping that complements the full-bodied flavour of the cheese without overpowering it. This creates a delicious balance of sweet, savoury and creamy in every bite.

Serving tip

Make this farmhouse-style flatbread extra festive by finishing it off with some fresh herbs such as basil, chives or rocket just before serving. Serve with a fresh green salad and a glass of dry white wine for a complete and flavourful meal.
